1st Amendment to the 11th Commandment

GOP Primary Politics is Rejecting Reagan Campaign Doctrine

There are 25 plays in politics.  But in the GOP primaries Republicans are accustomed to playing with fewer.  Call Outs, Baits, Jams, Labels and Pings are said to be off limits.  In 2012, however, they're playing with the full deck, much against the wishes of their late deity, Ronald Reagan.  The New York Times tells us how we got to this point.

In 1965, an order came down from a GOP mountaintop.  Wagging a finger at sniping gubernatorial candidates, the California State Republican party chairman, Gaylord Parkinson, suggested a better course by which to circle wagons and win elections:  “Though shalt not speak ill of any Republican.”  Ronald Reagan, then campaigning for the governorship and himself a target of communist cat calls, happily agreed and through the maze of history and misattribution, the admonishment morphed into his own: Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

Fast forward 47 years and one wonders if GOP candidates (Mitt, Newt, Ron, Rick-I'm-still-in and Rick-I'm-getting-out) are being less than religious about their adherence to the doctrine.  Superpac surrogates are talking trash.  And the contenders are too.  Vulture capitalist, sneers a jealous Perry, an attempted Label on Romney’s capitalist cunning.  Christian deviant, is the implicit Ping of Santorum’s Big Christian platform vis-a-vis Mitt’s Mormon faith.  They are, in fact, newborn practitioners of once-banished negative plays.

Is this good?  And for whom?  Candidates will tell you that to play by The 11th today is to play without a helmet.  Others will say it’s a breach of party rules.  Save it for the general election, is their best advice.  But this is not 1965.  The game is now faster and its players more facile, and like any evolved theatre of competition every angle is defined, every advantage mined.

To hell with the commandment and read the fine print, the campaigns are saying.  We just approved its first amendment.

Gingrich Ribs POTUS

In a playful jibe directed at President Obama, GOP contender Newt Gingrich challenged the POTUS to a debate, saying: "I already said that if he wants to use a teleprompter, then it would be fine with me.  It has to be fair.  If you [were] to defend ObamaCare, wouldn't you want a teleprompter?" Gore Blasts Obama on Climate

In a Rolling Stone essay to be published Friday, Gore rips the president for not making sufficient progress on global warming: “President Obama has never presented to the American people the magnitude of the climate crisis. He has not defended the science against the ongoing withering and dishonest attacks. Nor has he provided a presidential venue for the scientific community … to bring the reality of the science before the public.”  (politi.co/ihxrOT
