A Two-Part Play Sets the Stage for Success

Sensing an opportunity to ride a popular wave (i.e., Crowd a trend) Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert are hosting dueling rallies this Oct. 30 on the National Mall to capitalize (and spoof) on Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally.

Stewart's event, called the "Rally to Restore Sanity" is meant to appeal to moderates, with the motto, "Take it down a notch, America."  Meanwhile, Colbert's rally, meant to counter Stewart's and appeal to extremists, is aptly named, "The March to Keep Fear Alive."

The combined effects of the two rallies -- and the humorous and shameless promotion of them -- is a Peacock (i.e., a stunt).  Taken together, the Crowd + Peacock makes for great publicity, as the Crowd play capitalizes on what's already popular and the Peacock presents it in a way that's novel--a certain combination for success.
