Nabobs of Newt

Gingrich's 46 States Speech Counters Critics, Really!

Click here to listen to "Plays for the Presidency" on SiriusXM.

Florida’s GOP primary delivered a big boost for Mitt Romney and a rebuff for his top rival, Newt Gingrich. Watching the returns, commentators nattered, How will he take it? What will he do? What will he say? And so we waited for Newt’s concession speech.

First up was CNN’s Steve Schmidt. He was all over the place! declared the politico-turned-pundit. Others piled on. He’s too erratic. He’s shooting from the hip. He’s going to implode.

Or will he?

Focusing our Playmaker's microscope onto the Speaker’s spin, we doubt it. Gingrich was off-script, maybe, but he wasn’t off-strategy as he soothed sad supporters.

Here's a quick deconstruction of his clever closing prose, with apologies for paraphrasing:

Play #1. The Filter (Edit and omit). We have 46 states to go. That’s 46 ways to win. We were counted out before, so why should anyone think we can be counted out now?

Play #2. The Screen (Invoke people, ideas or brands). Lincoln reminded us that ours is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.  Not the other way around.

Play #3. The Fiat (State the facts). We will continue for six months to Tampa. It is the people of principle who will win. Not the people of money.

Play #4. Challenge (Exhort others to action).  Make a contract with me.

Play #5. Crowd (Join in). On my first day as President, I will repeal Obamacare, Sarbanes-Oxley, Dodd-Frank and every anti-religious act by Obama.  I will sign the Keystone pipeline into law, open an embassy in Jerusalem, remove every White House Czar, and block every dime that funds abortion.

Play #6. Fiat (State the facts). You can hold me accountable. I pledge you my life, my fortune, my sacred honor.

Critics were too quick to judge the performance.  Newt didn’t flinch, he filtered, reminding us that he’s a modern comeback kid. He didn’t scream, he screened the wisdom of honest Abe. He didn’t fret, he declared by fiat his coming trip to Tampa. He didn’t cry, he crowded Romney’s oval-office-narrative, telling us more richly than Mitt all that he’ll do on Day One. Finally, he didn’t fold. By way of another fiat, he promised action and accountability.

Pig pile on The Speaker if you must.  But to keep his candidacy in this election season, Newt Gingrich was very much the hunter and, we maintain, still in the hunt.

A Presidential Snub

Curious about two-part plays? Here's an example of a "snub," in which the Filter + Call Out was used to rebuff President Obama.  At one point, the Playmakers thought the "Snub" might be a unique stratagem.  But through field testing, focus groups and careful studying, we now know it's a "harmonic" (i.e., a two-part play). Cheney's Memoirs

Former-VP Dick Cheney relies heavily on framing plays -- namely the Filter and the Recast -- both to characterize his own decisions and cast those of others in his new memoir, In My Time.  (nyti.ms/prcJC9)

Obama Presided Over Biggest Job Loss--Sorta

Likely GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney unleashed his strongest criticism yet of Barack Obama.  During a speech to the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, Romney claimed President Obama had stood over the greatest job loss in American history.  But as The Washington Post points out this morning, this assertion depends on a clever interpretation of the data, which doesn't make the claim wrong, but doesn't make it right either. http://wapo.st/dQfHV0
